Ell’s MLB Offseason Grades 2026: NL Central

Reds C+

The Reds goal was to add some batting and add to the bullpen. The team re-signed closer P Emilio Pagan while adding a few relief pitchers to the mix. The Reds added 3B Eugenio Suarez coming off a 49-homerun season making this his 2nd stint with the team. The team also added OF J.J. Bleday who has good power to his bat and traded for OF Dane Myers who is more of an on base guy. The team traded 2B/OF Gavin Lux while letting OF Austin Hays and 3B Miguel Andujar leave. Pitchers Zack Littell and Wade Miley are both free agents, but both may move on despite a good season from Littell.

Pirates B+

The Pirates have been very active this offseason as the goal was to add bats and improve the bullpen. The team traded for 2B Brandon Lowe who will be a major upgrade along with OF Jake Mangum who is young late bloomer with potential. 1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn gives them good versatility and another solid power bat with consistency. The team was able to add OF Jhostynxon Garcia who should be a good on base player with the playing time available. OF/DH Marcell Ozuna is a solid power bat coming off a down season but should be productive. Relief pitchers Gregory Soto and Mason Montgomery should help the bullpen. P Johan Oviedo was the only big loss in the trade for Garcia and the only free agents are outfielders Tommy Pham and Andrew McCutchen who could come back due to being a fan favorite but might not be needed with the upgrades.

Cubs B+

The Cubs main free agent was Kyle Tucker, but he ended up being too high for their budget allowing a move to upgrade with 3B Alex Bregman a solid veteran presence who can do it all. The team was able to keep P Shota Imanaga which was a big move and trading for one of the top pitchers in the trade market in Edward Cabrera mostly parting with top prospect Owen Cassie, but the Cubs have a solid OF unit. The team also added some relief pitching to help the bullpen. Veteran 1B/3B Justin Turner is the only free agent, but at his age he might not be needed with Bregman in the mix.

Cardinals F

The Cardinals have officially entered a full rebuild under President Chaim Bloom who has decided to move off big contracts and veterans for prospects with a big percentage off the costs still on the team. The team traded 1B Willson Contreras, #1 P Sonny Gray, 3B Nolan Arenado, 2B/OF Brendan Donovan, while allowing P Miles Mikolas to walk. The team P Dustin May who had #3/4 pitcher potential with the Dodgers before last season. Pitchers Richard Fitts, Brandon Clarke, and Hunter Dobbins give them starting/relief versatility who Bloom should know from his time with Red Sox. Prospect P Jurrangelo Cijntje was the main piece of the Donovan trade and should also be in the pitching mix eventually.

Brewers C-

The Brewers did what they do best as a mid-market team moving off contracts for prospects to save costs. #1 P Freddy Peralta was traded for 2 of the Mets top prospects in P Brandon Sproat and SS Jett Williams who should be in the mix. The team re-signed P Brandon Woodruff who might be the new #1 with the Peralta trade. In the trade of 3B Caleb Durbin, the team added P Kyle Harrison who been a good #3 pitcher is only 25. Fans are shocked the team gave up on late bloomers Durbin and OF Isaac Collins, but Brewers have been known to move at the right time. Veteran C Gary Sanchez gives them a power bat behind Contreras as good insurance. The team loss P Jose Quintana who was a good surprise and let P Erick Fedde walk after a down year.
