Ell’s MLB Offseason Grades 2026: NL East

Mets B

The Mets were one of the most active teams this offseason adding SS Bo Bichette, but to play 3B as they have Francisco Lindor, but Lindor is now hurt. The team signed 2B Jorge Polanco to play 1B to replace the loss of Pete Alonso. The Mets traded OF Brandon Nimmo for 2B Marcus Semien to bring defense to the position. The team signed one of the top closers in P Devin Willams to replace Edwin Diaz which could be an upgrade if Williams regains form. The Mets were able to trade for ace P Freddy Peralta who is on a cost friendly deal. The team had to part with some top prospects this season while also downgrading in the bullpen. The team still has pitching depth in free agency in Griffin Canning and Frankie Montas and outfield depth in Starling Marte and Jesse Winker, but it doesn’t look like they will be back.

Braves C

The Braves fixed their closer situation adding P Robert Suarez while also re-signing Raisel Iglesias giving them their setup and closer. The team re-signed SS Ha-Seong Kim who solidified the position last season but has suffered an injury already, so SS Jorge Mateo was also signed bringing good defense. A trade for utility player Mauricio Dubon from the Astros gives them another SS option also. The team signed P Martin Perez who has been a good #4 pitcher. The team signed OF Mike Yastrzemski who should help in the outfield with the loss of veteran Marcell Ozuna. Catcher Jonah Heim was signed giving them another solid Catcher which may allow a trade down the line.

Phillies B-

The Phillies brought back their own which was most important in DH/OF Kyle Schwarber who is coming off 50+ homeruns and long-time C J.T. Realmuto. The team signed OF Adolis Garcia as a low-risk high reward move as a power bat with good defense who has declined. The team also upgraded a bullpen which gave them struggles last season. They tried to upgrade with SS Bo Bichette, but he didn’t take the deal last minute. The main losses were P Ranger Suarez and defensive OF Harrison Bader. P Walker Buehler is still a free agent and could be brought back.

Nationals C

The Nationals big move was trading top pitcher MacKenzie Gore for prospects to the Rangers getting even more from the original Juan Soto trade. SS/3B Gavin Fien was the main piece along with other prospects. The team added P Miles Mikolas who is more of an innings guy and P Foster Griffin who has rebuilt his value in Japan. The only main losses were power bats 1B Josh Bell and 3B Paul DeJong who don’t fit the young team’s timeline.

Marlins C+

The Marlins big move was trading pitcher Edward Cabrera for prospects to the Cubs with the main piece being OF Owen Cassie who is expected to start in the outfield. The team added OF Esteury Ruiz and 3B Christian Morel, both players had good starts to their career but have declined; they are young enough to rebound. The team traded away some players nearing 30 to get younger which fits their timeline.
