Ell’s 2026 NFL Free Agency Grades: AFC East

Bills: C+

Key Additions: WR D.J. Moore C Connor McGovern (re-signed), Edge Bradley Chubb, CB Dee Alford, S C.J. Gardner-Johnson, S Geno Stone, S Damar Hamlin (re-signed), C/G Austin Corbett, QB Kyle Allen

Key Losses: DE Joey Bosa, G David Edwards, S Taylor Rapp, WR Brandin Cooks, QB Mitch Trubisky, WR Curtis Samuel

The Bills made the shocking trade to start free agency for Moore giving them a 1B WR who will pose as a #1 for them, but he did come up big in the playoffs for the Bears and stays healthy. Chubb is a solid pass rusher when healthy coming off a good season, but health is key, he replaces Bosa. McGovern was an important piece on the O-line. Corbett helps replace Edwards at Guard giving versatility. Stone and Gardner-Johnson add to a Safety mix in need of starter to replace Rapp; C.J. is more of a movable piece while Hamlin continues to add depth. Alford is a veteran nickel CB who should be productive. Allen replaces Trubisky as the veteran #2 QB. Cooks and Samuel provided depth but will not be needed.

Patriots: B-

Key Additions: WR Romeo Doubs, G Alijah Vera-Tucker, Edge Dre’Mont Jones, S Kevin Byard

Key Losses: C Garrett Bradbury (trade), WR Stefon Diggs, TE Austin Hooper, Edge K’Lavon Chaisson, S Jaylinn Hawkins, DT Khyiris Tonga

The Patriots signed the perfect replacement for Diggs in Doubs who is a good, young, inside/outside WR who knows how to get open. Tucker is a solid Guard when healthy and allows 2nd year player Jared Wilson to move to Center replacing Bradbury. Byard proved he still has something left in the tank with Bears giving the team a veteran presence replacing Hawkins. Jones is a solid pass rusher reuniting with HC Mike Vrabel after making his mark with the Titans and Ravens last season. His pass rush helps replace Chaisson although Jones is more D-line based, so a replacement might be needed. Tonga was an underrated pick up and run stopper, he will need to be replaced. Hooper was an underrated pass catcher who will need to be replaced also.

Dolphins: C-

Key Additions: QB Malik Willis, WR TuTu Atwell, WR Jalen Tolbert, TE Greg Dulcich (re-signed), Edge David Ojabo, T/G Jamaree Salyer, LB Willie Gay Jr. (re-signed), Edge Josh Uche

Key Losses: QB Tua Tagovailoa, WR Tyreek Hill, Edge Bradley Chubb, TE Darren Waller, WR Jaylen Waddle (trade)

The Dolphins ended last season in tank mode and started free agency cutting off the big contracts in Tua and Hill, although Tua’s contract will cost them a lot, but it has been done before. The team got good value on the trade for Waddle, although they don’t have a replacement. Willis replaces Tua and could be a solid building piece as a growing young QB coming off solid play last season, but he will need weapons. Atwell and Tolbert help replace Hill and Waddle and while they are veterans, the production isn’t even close. Dulcich proved to be an improved TE and may end up as the starter if Waller isn’t brought back.  Salyer was an underrated signing in my opinion as a versatile player who can play anywhere but Center; he should start at Guard. Ojabo and Uche add pass rush depth with the loss of Chubb. Gay played well last season and could have an upgraded role.

Jets: B

Key Additions: RB Breece Hall (franchise), QB Geno Smith (trade), G Dylan Parham, Edge Joseph Ossai, DT David Onyemata, CB Nashon Wright, S Minkah Fitzpatrick (trade), LB Demario Davis, DT T’Vondre Sweat (trade)

Key Losses: G Alijah Vera-Tucker, G John Simpson, Edge Jermaine Johnson II (trade), QB Tyrod Taylor, WR John Metchie III, LB Quincy Williams

The Jets smartly kept their best playmaker in Hall on the franchise tag and should work to keep him long term or not allow him to walk for nothing. Smith is back for his 2nd stint with the team looking to lead the way as the QB and veteran replacing Taylor. Parham has been an above-average level starter and can replace Vera-Tucker, but with the loss of Simpson I expect a Guard to be drafted. The trade for Sweat gives them a young run stopper with potential to help replace Quinnen Williams they traded during the season, although it cost them a good pass rusher in Johnson. I like the trade for Fitzpatrick giving them a veteran playmaker. Similar with Davis, a longtime veteran run stopper reuniting with HC Aaron Glenn to replace Williams. Wright is coming off a breakout season and will be expected to do the same in this secondary. Onyemata is another consistent Nose Tackle known for stopping the run also. Ossai is a young pass rusher with potential who has the size to play on the line or off the edge.
