Ell’s Early 2025 MLB Review: AL Central

AL West

Tigers

Good: The pitching overall, especially the starting unit, led by ace and last year’s CY Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. Young P Jackson Jobe has been good so far and they’ve been able to ease him in with the production from the other starters. 1B Spencer Torkelson has made the jump from power bat to consistent player. OF Kerry Carpenter is off to a hot start as one of the core players. Signing 2B Gleyber Torres has been a smart move, as he has been productive. 2nd year C Dillon Dingler has been good so far showing power also. Veteran SS/3B Javier Baez is starting to get on base after a slow start and struggling last season; while also showing he can play CF. Veteran 3B/OF Zach McKinstry is playing well. OF Manuel Margot was playing well before injury.

Bad: Core player OF Riley Greene is off to a slow start. 2B/3B Colt Keith is struggling in year 2 moving positions with the addition of Torres. 2nd year SS Trey Sweeney has struggled so far. The team could possibly use one more bat, possibly a SS upgrade.

Guardians

Good: 3B Jose Ramirez continues to play at a high level as the star player and long-time veteran. OF Steven Kwan is off to a hot start at the lead off spot as the top player on the team right now. After a slow start, 2nd year 1B Kyle Manzardo is showing power leading the team in homeruns right now in his first year as a starter. 2B Gabriel Arias is off to a good start. OF Angel Martinez was playing well before injury. The pitching unit overall.

Bad: The bats not listed above haven’t produced including usually consistent OF Lane Thomas and SS Bryan Rocchio. Power bat OF Jhonkensy Noel has been horrible in his 2nd year. Production from the Catcher position. Ace Shane Bieber is still recovering from injury and the starting pitching has just been ok. Star Closer Emmanuel Clase hasn’t played well this season. Relief Pitcher Paul Sewald hasn’t played well who they signed in the offseason. The team could use a relief pitcher and an upgrade at SS and Catcher.

Royals

Good: The starting pitching has been good led by ace Cole Ragans and the overall pitching has been good. Closer Carlos Estevez has played well who they added in the offseason. SS Bobby Witt Jr. continues to be the star of the team. 3B Maikel Garcia has gotten off to a good start after going cold last season. OF Drew Waters has gotten off to a good start after struggling last season. Free agent addition OF Mark Canha was playing well before injury.

Bad: Witt can’t carry the team like he did last season. The bats have gotten off to a slow start and the team hasn’t hit with much power. 1B Vinnie Pasquantino and usually reliable veteran C Salvador Perez have struggled and both are the main power hitters on the roster. Trade acquisition 2B Jonathan India hasn’t play well so far. OF M.J. Melendez has been horrible as another struggling power bat. C/DH Freddy Fermin has struggled so far also. The team could use a relief pitcher and two bats, preferably one with power.

Twins

Good: Rookie 2B Luke Keaschall has shown the ability to get on base while getting experience. OF’s Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach are starting to show power. 2nd year P David Festa has played well so far.

Bad: The starting pitching has been bad outside of ace Pablo Lopez who has been injured and #2 Joe Ryan. 3B Royce Lewis is hurt again not seeing the field so far this season. The overall team batting production average and power wise. The decline in production at Catcher from last season. SS Carlos Correa is off to a slow start. Injury to OF Matt Wallner.

White Sox

Good: The starting pitching has been better than expected with no big names. The young bats are getting experience with OF Brooks Baldwin playing well. OF Andrew Benintendi has been playing well after struggling last season.

Bad: The team is only one win above having the worst record in baseball. OF Luis Robert is struggling again hurting his trade value. The batting overall with nobody coming to save them. Trading P Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox for no one who can help them. The team lacks the talent to move up.
